Did some weeding and planted a few feet of red beets today.  Added lime and a healthy amount of fertilizer.  Peas are coming up and looking good.  Lettuce is coming up kinda thin and no signs of carrots yet.  We haven't had as much rain as usual so that could be the culprit.  Oh, onions look again.

And the tiller seems to be doing better these days.  When I tried to start it today I had no luck, so I pulled the plug and saw it was encrusted with carbon.  Cleaned it up again and it started right up and ran like a champ!  Of course it's still using to much oil but at least it's running.  This fall I'll have it winterized and see what it's issues are.  I'll also ask for a new muffler, this one is shot.

Tilled the lower section of the garden.  The tiller seems to have some engine problems.  It's burning a lot of oil and doesn't seem to be running right.  Possibly the rings are shot?  I don't think the tiller is long for this world. :(

Planted the sugar peas, lettuces, carrots and onions.  Added bone meal to the onions and the lettuce got bone meal and garden tone.  (Note: All Espoma)  And added lime to the whole area.

Busted the roto-tiller out after work and roto-tilled the upper part of the garden.  I didn't really know what to expect since I didn't even break ground last year.  But luckily the ground wasn't to hard.  Some rye had reseeded and was up and that seemed to help keep the soil loose which was nice.  I was kinda disappointed that it didn't produce more organic material but oh well, it was still definitely better than leaving exposed ground.  I also threw on some compost that had accumulated over the past 2 years.  While there wasn't alot it was a decent amount.

So far this spring has been very dry.  Hope this isn't a peak at what the summer will be like.  But tonight we did finally get a t-storm that gave us around a 1/4 inch.  It's a start but we need much more than that!

My next task is to start buying seeds!  I'll probably get most from the local gardening center and I might order some from Burpee's but I doubt it.  And I guess I'll be buying tomato plants this year since I didn't get any started indoors on time.  I never got around to setting up my indoor growing equipment.

I stopped by Stauffer's Garden Center to pick up some seeds.  I normally like to hit up E.M. Herr's in Willow Street but Stauffer's was just more convenient and I needed seeds NOW!

I was pretty impressed with the selection this year!  Lotsa seeds and they had the lettuce that I love!  At least I think it's the same kind.  It's been years since I was able to find it.  In a few weeks I'll know if Buttercrunch is my long lost beloved lettuce or not.  I also got a lettuce mix similar to mesclun.

Let's see, what else did I get.  Some white onions.  I usually get yellow but they end up getting used like white onions so I just went with white this year.  Should work out better that way.

And last but not least are the sugar peas.  Oregon Sweet Pods II to be exact.  I gotta get all this stuff planted soon before the cool weather is gone and the hot summer days are upon us!

Oops!  Forgot to mention the carrots too!

DISASTER HAS STRUCK!  I headed to my parent's place for some relaxing gardening after work when things went terribly wrong.  I started the rototiller up, headed to the garden, got there and started rototilling.  All was well until suddenly the tines stopped turning.  Hmmm?  What's going on?  I looked around and noticed a broken weld that held the wheel and a brace for the tine actuator cable.  So there was no way the thing was gonna do anymore rototilling. My dad knows someone who should be able to fix the weld.  Hopefully that works out because I'd really rather not end up buying a new one.  The things ain't cheap!  It would be nice to have a big fancy new one but the one I have is flexible since I can use it with four tines or just two.  Four is nice for working large areas of ground and two tines are nice for getting between rows or breaking up hard ground.  Oh, and I can't forget that it's good for a work out too since it's a rather large front tine beast.  I'll find out what the verdict is tomorrow and hopefully it's good news.

And speaking of good news, there's leaf buds on the rasberries!  Hopefully they do well this year.

BREAKING NEWS!  I've just been informed that my rototiller has been fixed!  Thanks Dad!  It rained a good bit this morning so I don't know when I'll be able to get into the garden again, hopefully tomorrow.  I really need to get stuff planted!

I finally got back into the garden to plant some seeds.  The ground was still alittle on the wet side but workable.  Started off with the sugar peas.  The package said 1/2 pound per 50'.  That seemed alittle excessive to me since I ended up with what was nearly a solid line of peas.  We'll see how that turns out.  Also planted white onions which were treated to a healthy dose of bone meal and rock phosphorus.  Should make them nice and big!  Next were the lettuces and carrots.  I hate planting stuff like this because the seeds are so tiny!  I just kinda sprinkle the seeds in a row and thin later.  That's all there is to tell for now, so until next time...
